This study analyzes the phenomenon of Tempo Magazine's rejection of an advertisement offering to celebrate the 10-year achievements of Joko Widodo's administration in 2024 through a media political economy perspective. Using Vincent Mosco's theoretical framework, which encompasses the concepts of commodification, spatialization, and structuration, this study uncovers the media's structural dilemma between economic needs and journalistic idealism. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and phenomenological methods through in-depth interviews and document studies. The analysis shows that Tempo's decision to reject the government's advertisement offer represents a form of resistance to the commodification of media content and an effort to maintain editorial independence amid market pressures and political power. This phenomenon emphasizes the importance of internal policies such as the separation of business and editorial functions (firewall) and public political-media literacy to maintain press integrity. This study recommends diversification of media business models, advertorial transparency, and strengthening regulations so that media remains a pillar of democracy in the era of commercialization.
